A extensive rescue and recovery mission is currently under way in the Caribbean waters for a pair of lost boats carrying humanitarian supplies en route from Mexico to Cuba.

Maritime Rescue Operations Initiated

Mexico has dispatched naval teams and search planes to find the two vessels, which were had on board a minimum of nine sailors, according to a official statement.

The boats had been projected to make landfall in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their arrival, the navy said.

The Situation of Relief to the Nation

Cuba has depended significantly on Mexico's over the past few weeks, as the island endures widespread power outages across the country.

"Both skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and each boat are fitted with proper navigational gear and emergency beacons," a spokesperson involved in the effort stated.

The nine individuals on board are nationals of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with rescue coordination centers from the involved countries along with their consular staff.

"We are co-operating fully with the officials and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to make it to Cuba without incident," the official further stated.

Previous Aid Shipment

Just days before, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had delivered 14 tonnes of donated goods to the island.

That vessel, dubbed "a new Granma" following the name of the yacht in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, carried photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, bikes and provisions.

Wider Political Context

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded initiatives to bring critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the country was initiated.

International organizations have since warned of ""critical" supply shortages, with in excess of 50k surgeries called off in Cuba because of electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy tensions have intensified in recent months, with comments from different representatives emphasizing the complex state of relations.

In response to previous statements, a senior official from Cuba declared that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Reports suggest that initial phases of talks commenced, although their present status remains uncertain.

The Mexican navy affirmed it was dedicated to using every available asset at its command to locate the boats and guarantee the safety of the sailors.

As of now, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
