The Young Spinner Makes Unexpected Selection in England's Test Series Team

The English team has opted for a twelve-player squad just two days before the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a surprise spot.

Bashir's inclusion suggests that the visiting team will wait until the morning of the initial match to decide whether Perth Stadium conditions suit four seamers or the addition of a spin bowler.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the 12-man squad, showing there are no doubts about their fast bowler's fitness.

Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the attack, with the latter most likely to be omitted if Bashir makes the final team.

Pitch Factors Favor Pace Bowlers

The England coach had been anticipated to choose an pace-only lineup on a ground that has hosted five previous Tests.

During these matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by seamers, with only 40 to spin.

Of those spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has claimed the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers combined have just a handful.

On a ground renowned for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team loaded with seamers is still the probable choice.

Alternative Choices Considered

There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to provide some spin while also bolstering the batting lineup.

But the coach has opted to stick with the young spinner, having said previously that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the Ashes.

In July, Lyon described Bashir as “OK,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still the English best spinner.”

“It is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for people who haven’t done it in the previous in Australian pitches,” Lyon remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.

“I won't let my secrets out so opponents perform and excel out here.”
