England’s men’s team will initiate their UEFA Euro 2028 campaign at the Etihad Stadium, provided that they achieve the anticipated entry for a championship staged throughout the bulk of Britain and the Republic of Ireland.
The Etihad Stadium has not staged an England men’s match since eight years ago, when the Turkish team were beaten 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is expected to host the national team for their first match on a Saturday in June 2028.
England are scheduled to play their last two group stage games at Wembley, but, if they top Group B, their last-16 tie would occur at St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean commencing the elimination stage at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The championship was unveiled at an ceremony in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday evening. High-ranking officials from the tournament organizers and the organizing bodies were barracked as they approached the location by about 50 activists, who urged Israel to be kicked out from international football because of the conflict in Gaza.
Signs were held up with messages reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
The opening game of the tournament will be staged at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a fixture that will feature the Dragons if they qualify.
Wembley Stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the title decider, which will be staged on July 9, 2028 with a kick-off time at late afternoon.
It is anticipated that an afternoon start, which will also be adopted for UEFA Champions League finals from next season, will cater to family audiences and help engage a more diverse set of audiences.
The Irish team are due to play their opening match at the Dublin stadium and the Tartan Army would follow suit at Hampden Park.
The national sides of all four hosts will enter the preliminary stage; two automatic spots will be set aside for any that do not reach the finals through that route.
The Birmingham venue and Spurs’ ground finalize the event’s nine venues. Each one will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarterfinal matches held at every host’s main arena.
The qualification draw will be staged in the Northern Irish capital, which was dropped as a host city last year when it emerged the Belfast stadium could not be renovated in time, on 6 December 2026.
“The event will be a tournament for the followers and a celebration of everything we value about the game – its emotion and ability to bring people together.”
In excess of three million admissions, a unprecedented number for a men’s European Championship, are anticipated to be made available to fans.
