The Mayor-Elect confirms his intention to reside in the storied Gracie Mansion

New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that was a central issue in his run for office.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors after the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core policy, did not confirm his residency plans promptly following his electoral win in November.

"This decision came down to keeping my family safe and the need to directing all of my focus on enacting the platform on affordability the city's residents supported," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community renowned for its diverse immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, it will always live inside me and my efforts as mayor," he said.

Political Debate

In his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.

Yet his critics, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit although he hails from a prominent family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a place for public city functions, and championed significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience a setting a stark contrast to his humble Astoria digs.

With its butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished consistent with the home's historical period.

The estate, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, meaning the city regulates on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.

New Yorkers consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the cost of housing rises faster than the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
