The original creators of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has stated that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that established the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, announced how he plans to personally create the controversial product within a personal collection highlighting causes Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from speaking out about.
The recent development escalates the ongoing tension between the internationally recognized ice cream maker with Unilever, the British consumer goods giant which acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
The co-founders maintain that the parent company along with its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".
Mr. Cohen stated via an Instagram video how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions for the product's name plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has emerged as an emblem for support for Palestinians due to its coloration, that closely resemble those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Several years ago, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in territories occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever selling the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales within disputed territories.
The new dessert series is being developed under Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company that originally created several years back for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".
Mr. Cohen indicated that he plans to create additional ice cream flavors focusing on concerns that the company was silenced from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, after decades of involvement, citing concerns that its independence was undermined after Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.
Previously, Mr. Cohen stated that “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for its independence so that the company can achieve its ethical purpose, the values which it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he told journalists.
