At least 16 individuals were killed and in excess of 40 were wounded when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to hospital.
The victims have not yet been officially identified, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the individuals who have been named to date.
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Known as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She told the moments leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.
One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
