The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the hit series reaching its finale—and a second season officially in the works—the creative team opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's intentional. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
Considering the writers aren't taking cues by public opinion, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… sort of.
“There are some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to abandon a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
