McLaren Racing Points Finger at Competitors for Team-Mate Crash

McLaren Formula 1 bosses Zak Brown and Andrea Stella attributed competitors for the collision between Piastri and Lando Norris at the start of the US GP sprint event.

Piastri, leading his teammate in the championship by twenty-two points, crashed into his fellow McLaren driver after making contact with Sauber's Hulkenberg.

The collision forced out both McLaren drivers out of the race, along with Aston Martin's Alonso, who was on the inner side of the Sauber driver.

McLaren Leaders Voice Frustration Over Incident

Brown, McLaren Racing's chief executive officer, stated to Sky Sports that some of the racing at the start was "unprofessional", adding: "Obviously Hulkenberg made contact with Oscar and he had no reason being where he was."

McLaren F1 team principal Stella added: "Our feeling is that we are disappointed that we were denied the opportunity to race."

"It's surprising that some racers with a lot of expertise don't act with appropriate caution. Enter the first corner, make sure you don't damage competitors and continue."

The team clarified that Stella was pointing to both Hulkenberg and the Aston Martin driver.

Contrasting Views on the Crash

Nevertheless, former champion Damon Hill, providing analysis for a sports broadcast, said he believed Piastri had not shown enough awareness of the risks of the opening turn of an Formula 1 event when he decided to cut back to try to overtake Norris.

The Australian had a stronger launch than Norris and at first competed on the outer side on the ascending approach to the turn.

However he then cut back in an attempt to get a run on Norris on the exit, only to hit the Sauber driver.

Racer Comments After the Collision

Piastri said: "Less than perfect but I haven't seen what happened, I attempted to move inside on Lando and we were both very far from the apex and then got a hit and it propelled me into Norris. Unfortunate."

Norris commented: "I just got hit, right? I was not at fault. Behind us things happened and I just got unlucky and got hit because of it. I am unsure. I need to look a bit more thoroughly. It's more people further back just being a bit careless and we are the result of that."

The Aston Martin driver said: "At one point I thought I was in the right place on the inside, but some cars came very fast from the outer side switching back and then I was there in the middle."

Hulkenberg, who had earned a season-best fourth, said: "Big frustrations. All the good work from yesterday in the trash. Just chaotic."

"Piastri steered inward pretty forcefully trying to get the undercut and exit of Turn One but I cannot vanish."

"I had Alonso attack on the inner side and I couldn't see him any more. I aimed to provide room for him and then Piastri steered inward and the collision was inevitable."

Aftermath and McLaren's Reaction

McLaren will analyze the crash with their racers but not until the event weekend. Both cars needed significant repairs before grand prix qualifying at 22:00 BST on the weekend.

Stella said: "Overall displeased but we take it on the chin, we are now concentrating on fixing the cars, there is a lot to do and then we will resume the weekend from there."

"Our team holds a strong position from our competitiveness point of view so I hope we have the possibility to compete, race normally and utilize our performance."

"The points are the most important thing, I don't want to talk about mal-intent, just caution. A little more prudence would be beneficial for everyone."

Championship Implications

The sprint event was taken by the Verstappen, who gained ground on both McLaren drivers in the championship - he is now fifty-five points behind the Australian and thirty-three adrift of Norris.

The team boss said: "The consequence is what the numbers show - we missed out on eight points with both racers, but we focus on ourselves. We have a highly capable car and two skilled racers. We look forward to just some standard competition."

Verstappen said he was approaching the championship one event at a time.
