Republicans in the state of California filed a federal lawsuit this Wednesday, challenging a high-stakes redistricting initiative that could flip as many as five House seats for Democrats.
The measure, Proposition 50, was approved by voters Tuesday night, marking a decisive victory for Democrats. The plan grants on a temporary basis the authority to draw electoral boundaries to the state's legislative body, enabling it to approve district maps that will help the Democratic party gain five seats in the House of Representatives.
The plan is a direct response to partisan redistricting in Texas, where GOP lawmakers, following the US president's direction, have created a number of new safe Republican districts.
