Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, including the pastel suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
This news arrives shortly after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as a number of outfits for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
Design circles says farewell to a true visionary whose impact on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
