Arrangements for Putin-Trump Meeting Shelved Shortly Following Budapest Talks Announced

There are "no plans" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russia's Putin "in the near term", a White House official has stated.

Last Thursday the US president stated he and the Russian president would hold talks in Hungary's capital soon to discuss the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the administration clarified the two had had a "constructive" conversation and that a meeting was no longer "required".

The administration declined to provide additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.

Earlier Events

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit over the phone with Putin, a just prior to hosting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports claimed his talks with Zelensky had been a "heated exchange", with insiders claiming the president had pushed him to give up extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a agreement with Russia.

Yet, on this week Trump supported a ceasefire proposal endorsed by Kyiv and EU officials to pause the war on the present positions.

"Leave it as is in its current state," he stated.

Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against freezing the existing front lines.

The Russian government was exclusively seeking "permanent resolution", Lavrov stated on this week, implying that halting hostilities would merely represent a temporary ceasefire.

Political Perspectives

The "underlying reasons" of the conflict needed to be addressed, Lavrov emphasized, using Kremlin shorthand for a range of maximalist demands that involve the acknowledgment of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its European partners.

Zelensky commented discussions about the front line were the "start of negotiations" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to evade negotiations.

He further commented the sole subject that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the provision of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with Trump recently preceded speculation that the United States was preparing to send extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit Russian territory.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the Tomahawks issue that had pressured the Kremlin to engage in discussion. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had turned out to be a "strong investment" in international relations", he commented.
