Administration Reveals Government Employee Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark

The White House disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official process for terminating staff.

Although the official provided no details on which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a union representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services used by the public and vowed to contest the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an pretext to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver essential functions to communities nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be ended soon.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” Johnson stated. “Starting next week, American service members, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, labor groups sought a temporary restraining order to block the administration from implementing any reductions in force during the shutdown. Moreover, a federal judge ordered the government to disclose details on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any government staff had been brought back to carry out staff reductions.

A report argued that a government shutdown limits the authority of the government to conduct terminations, citing official advice that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been started before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs took place on the very day that government employees got only a partial paycheck covering the final days of the previous month but excluding the beginning of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the period.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.

“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our leaders in the legislature and the administration have failed to keep our government running,” Stier said. “Our flight regulators, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
